All About Groovin the Moo

The festival we know and love as Groovin the Moo began just as an idea, back in 2003. This idea was thought-up by a pair of neighbours from Newcastle, over a couple of drinks and a chat. They wanted to create a new music festival in Australia, which, according to Groovin the Moo, would focus on ‘fun, connection and affordability’. This festival would celebrate fantastic music, but also community, fostering the connection between local groups and the communities in which they operate. From the outset, Groovin the Moo was destined to be, ‘a music event, but different.’

April 2005 saw the inaugural Groovin the Moo show at the Gloucester Showgrounds in New South Wales. Headliners Killing Heidi, Evermore, Screaming Jets, and Grinspoon played for a crowd of around 1,400 music lovers. The following year saw the return of Groovin the Moo in three locations – Maitland (NSW), Darwin (NT), and Albury (NSW). The Hilltop Hoods, Faker, and The Herd headlined alongside Groovin the Moo’s first international act, Gomez.

2007 saw Groovin the Moo’s first sold-out show – Maitland (NSW) – and each consecutive year saw the expansion of the festival in various ways. For instance, in 2009, Bendigo (VIC) was added to the schedule, and Bunbury (WA) and Canberra were added in 2010.

After two years on pause in 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic, 2022 saw a pared back three show tour of Groovin the Moo. Now, 2023 marks the exciting return of a full six-show tour, and we for one, can’t wait!

Groovin the Moo line-up

Ocean Alley:

Formed in 2011 when they began to practice in a shed in Sydney, Ocean Alley are known for their psychedelic rock sound. With three studio albums under their belt and two ARIA nominations, the six-piece band is ready to bring an ‘epic set’ to Groovin the Moo.

Amy Shark:

As one of the most recognisable names in Australian music, Amy Shark is a singer, songwriter, and guitarist with a remarkable indie-pop sound. Performing between 2008 and 2012 as Amy Cushway, she settled on her stage name Amy Shark in 2013 because of her love of the Spielberg film Jaws. With 8 ARIA wins from 29 nominations and a number one album on the ARIA albums chart, Shark has cemented herself as one of the most successful names in Australian pop music today.

Barkaa:

Taking her name from the Barkindji term for the Darling River, Barkaa is one of the ‘most respected voices in Australian hip-hop’. A proud Malyangapa, Barkindji woman, Barkaa notes that music to her is about self-expression, ‘the truth, and issues impacting First Nations people’. At Groovin the Moo, you can expect Barkaa’s performance to be ‘full of energy and raw intense emotion’, so make sure not to miss it.
