You Must See This! Top Picks For Visiting Families

For those of you visiting Melbourne on holiday, what could be better than one of our day tours from the city? If you don’t have a car with you, we can show you some of the beautiful areas of Victoria outside the city. If you do have a car, we’ve got a stress-free, professionally led alternative that will bring you straight to the best sights and give you the background on what you’re looking at, too. We have a number of tours that are perfect for families with children, ranging from the educational to the active. Here are a few of our favourites.

PuffingBilly

Puffing Billy Half-Day Tour

Take your little ones to meet a real-life Thomas the Tank Engine on this short trip, perfect for younger children who might not cope well with a long day out. Puffing Billy is an immensely popular attraction located in the Danedong Ranges. As the oldest preserved steam railway in Australia, this little train is sure to charm children and train aficionados alike. You can feel the wind in your hair as you sit on the edge of the train enjoying the stunning rainforest wildlife.
Stopping at Grant reserve for a delicious snack of scones with jam and cream, you can enjoy feeding the native birds such as crimson rosellas, kookaburras and cockatoos – bird seeds provided.

Ballarat and Sovereign Hill Day Tour

Nothing gets kids interested in history like the chance to relive it for themselves. Take a trip into the past with a journey along the Western Highway, a 1850s coach route to Ballarat. There you can admire elegant gardens, impressive statues and gorgeous period architecture, all rich with local history. The trip concludes at Sovereign Hill, an impeccably recreated gold rush town. The town offers a number of realistic experiences such as panning for gold – always popular with children of all ages. The staff who populate the town are all very knowledgable and stay ‘in character’ as locals from the period to give you a really immersive day out. Take a trip around the museum and a tour down a mine to find out even more about this fascinating time in history.

Mount Buller Day Trip

It is hard to believe that this winter wonderland is just three hours away from Melbourne, and it makes a brilliant day trip if you are looking for something a little different as part of your stay. You can be as active as you choose, with skiing, snowboarding or tobogganing all on offer. If you or your children haven’t gone skiing before (or if you are just a bit rusty), you can add a lesson onto your day trip. If you’d rather just take in the views, you can get a ski lift to the summit of Mount Buller to enjoy the breathtaking panorama. This trip runs from June until September, but it will only be on offer if there is enough snow, so do check with us before making arrangements.
