Apollo Bay

One of the most popular fishing spots along the Great Ocean Road, Apollo Bay is a great place to go if you want to cast a line of the pier and try your luck at ocean fishing. Depending on the time of year, you can reel in salmon, squid, barracuda, mullet, haddock, and silver trevally.

The Lederberg River

A little over an hour north of Melbourne is the stunning Lederberg River. Nestled in a stunning sandstone and slate gorge, this fishing sanctuary is surrounded by thick bush and is a secret fishing hotspot for trout and blackfish.

Blue Rock Lake

One of the most popular fishing spots in the Gipplsland region, Blue Rock Lake is just 1 hour 40 minutes east of Melbourne and the perfect place to go if you want to enjoy a day of laid back fishing in serene pastoral surrounds. Big brown trout and redfin are abundant in Blue Rock and since 2002, the State Government has made a concerted effort to turn Blue Rock Lake into one of Victoria’s best bass fishing locations by releasing more than 160,000 bass fingerlings into the lake and setting up a tagged bass challenge.

The Wimmera River

If you want to get closer to nature and fish on gumtree lined banks, then the Wimmera River in the Grampians has plenty of choice spots to cast a line. 3 and a half hours northwest of Melbourne, this healthy river system is brimming with native species including golden and silver perch, Murray cod and of course carp. The Wimmera river is also the only place in Victoria where you can catch and keep two freshwater catfish measuring over 30 cm.
