As the school holidays for autumn wrap up this week, it’s likely that your kids are already looking forward to their winter mid-year break. Planning some activities in advance for the next school holidays will serve as some great motivation for your kids during the term, and can also reduce the hassle of organising things last minute. Our bus charter service from Melbourne takes our customers all over Victoria, so we have a few great activities up our sleeves that are sure to win the kids over. We are sharing some of our favourites today.
#1: Explore Legoland
The Legoland Discovery Centre is the ultimate playground for rainy days. All the exhibits and experiences inside – including the Racers Table, the 4D cinema, and MINILAND – are crafted around celebrating Lego. Many of them are interactive, too! It’s absolutely guaranteed to be memorable, exciting and occupying for your kids.
#2: Movie marathon day
New children’s films are typically released to account for school holidays, so closer to the holidays, be on the lookout for new releases. These days, the cinema experience is vast and varied. There are so many options for viewing movies, including:
- Going to IMAX and experiencing the movie on the big screen
- Visiting a child-friendly Village Cinema theatre (VJunior), which has a play area in the theatre
- Going to your local drive-in cinema.
Alternatively, if you prefer a day at home, you could also organise a movie marathon featuring all your kids’ favourites. Invite some of their friends over, make some hot and fresh popcorn, and you are set for the whole day!
#3: Have a bake-off at home
You don’t need to get out of the house or spend a lot of money to have a great winter school holiday. Why not set aside a day for baking some sweet treats with your kids? Licking the spoon after each recipe and spending hours decorating cupcakes makes for an entertaining (and tasty) afternoon for both you and the kids.
While there is no shortage of baking recipes out there, there are some that are particularly child-friendly and fairly easy to make, including:
- Chocolate chip cookies or jam drops
- Cupcakes (make sure to provide plenty of edible decorations!)
- Scones
#4: Spend the day at the aquarium
There’s nothing better to do on a rainy day than spending it warm and comfortable in Melbourne’s SEA LIFE Aquarium. Not only is the aquarium fun to explore and observe, but it is also a great learning experience for the kids. The top enclosures that are sure to amaze include the Penguin Playground, the Bay of Rays, the Mermaid Garden and the Crocodile Lair. There are also a number of interactive exhibits, such as the 4D Cinema Experience.
The aquarium also hosts some exciting activities that are exclusive to school holiday periods. Keep checking what’s on to see what will be available for the upcoming winter holidays.
#5: Get crafty
Another low-cost option for the winter school holidays is planning an arty afternoon. Whether this involves painting, a glittery DIY or a blanket fort, getting involved with crafts is a perfect (and inexpensive) way to spend the day in, especially if it’s cold and rainy outside.
#6: Go ice skating
Embrace the cold, rug up and head to your nearest ice skating rink. The O’Brien Icehouse in Docklands is definitely the most popular rink in Melbourne, however there are a few others scattered around the suburbs, including in Oakleigh South.
The O’Brien Icehouse offers special activities (such as free face painting) for school holidays, so it’s worth checking out to see what they have on for winter.
#7: Visit the Peninsula Hot Springs
There’s no better time to visit the Peninsula Hot Springs than in winter, and many of the bathing options in the Bath House are family-friendly. Visiting the Hot Springs is a good way to get outdoors in winter while staying nice and relaxed, and there are plenty of different spa experiences included in your entry that will occupy the kids. As bookings are essential, however, you’ll need to make sure you plan your trip to the Hot Springs well in advance.
