Since it was established back in 1855, the AAMI Victoria Derby Day has maintained a reputation as one of the most prestigious events on the Spring Racing Calendar. Known as one of the more sophisticated events on the Spring Racing Calendar, Derby Day combines the elegance of traditional racing with modern attractions such as live entertainment and Fashions on the Field. In this week’s blog, we share everything you need to know about the day, the food, fashion and entertainment highlights, as well as our raceday tips.
About the day
The 2017 AAMI Victoria Derby Day will take place on Saturday 4th November at Flemington Racecourse. Gates open at 8.30am with the first race at 11.45am and the last race at 5.20pm. The day features a card of nine group races with four at elite group one level. The Feature Group One AAMI Victoria Derby, which is Australia’s premier staying class for thoroughbred three-year-old horses is run over a distance of 2,500 metres and worth over AU$1.5 million. This race is also the last opportunity for horses to qualify for the Melbourne Cup, so a lot is at stake.
Food
There will be lots of delicious local and international cuisines to satisfy you throughout the day. For a classic American diner experience, head to 8bit in The Park, which will be serving burgers on brioche buns with mouthwatering fillings. 400 Gradi, the winner of 2014 Best Pizza in the World, will be cooking their authentic Napoletana wood fired pizzas while Hectors’ Deli will offer old-school sandwiches with classic fillings such as wagyu pastrami, ham-cheese-tomato toasties and chicken schnitzel rolls. For a sweet treat, indulge in authentic gelato from Zero Grati.
Fashion
The fashion is a major drawcard for any race day but Derby Day is particularly well known for it’s monochrome dress code and emphasis on men’s fashion. The Myer Fashions on the Field competition begins on Derby Day and the dress code is black and white. Ladies are encouraged to embrace the classic black and white look while men should opt for sleek grey suits (also known as morning suits). The Derby Day flower is the cornflower, which many men choose to wear in their lapels. To see the fantastic fashion, head to The Park, located on the hill across from the train station.
Entertainment
To celebrate ‘The Park’ turning one, Derby Day is boasting a huge entertainment program. The incredible line-up of live music includes DMA’s, Tkay Maidza, Hot Dub Time Machine, San Cisco, The Preatures, Bag Raiders and Sheppard. Relax at Pony Bar with a glass of Mumm champagne or a Schweppes Flemington Fling, then sit back and enjoy a premium stage view.
